📖 1. History and Features
The Three-Story Stone Pagoda at Baekjangam Hermitage of Silsangsa Temple, located in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, is National Treasure No. 10 of the Republic of Korea.
Built in the 9th century during the late Unified Silla period, this pagoda is considered one of the most beautiful examples showcasing the stylistic transition from late Silla to early Goryeo. It was originally erected on the site of Baekjangam Hermitage, a subsidiary of Silsangsa Temple, which was a major center of Buddhism during the Silla and Goryeo dynasties.
Constructed entirely of granite, it features a three-story body set upon a two-tiered base. Its overall composition is simple yet elegant, and the gently upturned edges of the roof stones enhance its sense of balance and stability. Although the finial (the decorative top ornament) is now missing, the remaining structure still conveys a harmonious and refined beauty.
Notably, a stone reliquary for sarira was discovered inside the pagoda, confirming its sacred function as a monument built to enshrine the relics of the Buddha.
