📖 1. History & Architectural Description

The Five-Story Stone Pagoda at Jeongnimsa Temple Site, located in Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do, is designated as National Treasure No. 9 of Korea.

Built during the Baekje Kingdom (6th–7th century), this elegant pagoda is regarded as one of the most refined and representative examples of Baekje Buddhist architecture. It once served as the central feature of Jeongnimsa Temple, a major religious complex in Sabi, the last capital of Baekje.

Constructed from finely dressed stone blocks, the pagoda perfectly translates the structural elegance of wooden architecture into stone form. It features a square base, a five-tiered body, and gently sloping eaves. The excellent proportional balance across all stories reflects the refined sense of symmetry and harmony characteristic of Baekje art.

A remarkable historical detail is the Tang victory inscription carved onto one of the stones by Chinese troops after their invasion and the fall of Baekje in 660 CE. This inscription remains visible today, serving as a poignant, firsthand reminder of the kingdom’s defeat and the enduring spirit of its people.

🪄 2. Significance

  • Architectural Value: It exemplifies the brilliance of Baekje architecture by successfully adapting wooden construction principles into stone, showcasing exceptional balance and grace.
  • Historical Importance: The visible Tang inscription is a rare and invaluable primary source that records the final days of the Baekje Kingdom.
  • Cultural Legacy: As a surviving masterpiece of Baekje Buddhism, the pagoda embodies both artistic finesse and historical fortitude.

🌸 3. A Warm Thought

The Five-Story Stone Pagoda at Jeongnimsa Temple Site stands quietly beneath the Buyeo sky—a timeless monument reminding us that even in the face of immense loss, the legacy of faith and artistry continues to rise with unwavering dignity.
