📖 1. History and Description
The Stone Lantern in Front of Gakhwangjeon Hall of Hwaeomsa Temple, located in Gurye, Jeollanam-do, is designated as National Treasure No. 12 of Korea.
This stone lantern, built during the Unified Silla period (8th–9th century), stands in front of Gakhwangjeon Hall at Hwaeomsa Temple, one of Korea’s most important Buddhist temples nestled at the foot of Jirisan Mountain.
Carved from granite, the lantern rises to about 6.4 meters in height—making it one of the tallest and most majestic stone lanterns in Korea. The structure consists of a square base, a central shaft adorned with lotus motifs, a large octagonal light chamber, and a beautifully proportioned capstone. Each part harmonizes with the others, creating a sense of elegant stability and sacred balance.
The lantern’s refined proportions and subtle curves embody the artistic sophistication of Unified Silla craftsmanship. It was designed to illuminate the temple courtyard, symbolizing Buddhist enlightenment dispelling the darkness of ignorance.
