📖 1. History & Description
The Stupa at Godal Temple Site, located in Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do, was designated as National Treasure No. 4 of Korea.
This stupa was built in the 10th century during the Goryeo Dynasty, serving as a reliquary monument dedicated to the eminent monk Shinwol (神月, 913–973), who contributed significantly to shaping early Goryeo Buddhism.
The stupa is made of finely cut granite and is remarkable for its octagonal base, multi-layered body, and lotus-shaped roof stone. Its elegant proportions and detailed carvings of guardian figures, lotus petals, and cloud motifs reflect the high craftsmanship of Goryeo artisans.
Although the temple Godalsa itself no longer survives, this stupa remains as one of the finest examples of Goryeo Buddhist stone art, symbolizing both religious devotion and artistic excellence.
🪄 2. Significance
- Religious Value: Built to enshrine the relics of Monk Shinwol, it reflects the spiritual life of the Goryeo Buddhist community.
- Artistic Achievement: Demonstrates the refined stone-carving techniques of the 10th century, with detailed ornamentation and superb balanced form.

🌸 3. A Warm Thought
