📖 1. History and Description
The Stone Lantern in Front of Muryangsujeon Hall of Buseoksa Temple, located in Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is designated as National Treasure No. 17 of Korea.
This lantern, built during the Unified Silla period (8th century), stands before Muryangsujeon Hall, one of Korea’s oldest surviving wooden Buddhist halls. Together, they represent the spiritual and artistic harmony of Silla Buddhist architecture.
Carved from fine granite, the lantern stands about 2.4 meters tall and is composed of a square base, an octagonal shaft, and a hexagonal light chamber. Each component is proportionally balanced, demonstrating the elegance and symmetry that define Silla aesthetics.
The light chamber, once illuminated by sacred lamps, symbolizes the Buddhist light of wisdom dispelling ignorance, while the upward curves of the roofstone suggest ascension toward enlightenment. The craftsmanship shows both precision and serenity—its calm form radiating quiet dignity under the open temple sky.
Though centuries have passed, the lantern remains in excellent condition, continuing to embody the refined artistry and spiritual depth of the Unified Silla era.
