“The Legend of the Jindo Dog”
(진돗개 전설 · Jindotgae Jeonseol)
🕰️ 1. The Story
Long ago, on the quiet island of Jindo, there lived a young woman named Hwari and her loyal dog Baekgu. Baekgu had snow-white fur, sharp eyes, and a brave heart that never wavered. The villagers said he was no ordinary dog, but one blessed by the island’s guardian spirits.
Hwari and Baekgu were inseparable. They walked the beaches at dawn, tended the fields together, and shared every meal. Baekgu understood her voice, her footsteps, even the rhythm of her heartbeat.
One spring, a large group of villagers set sail to the mainland for trade. Hwari went with them, leaving Baekgu in the care of her elderly mother. But halfway across the sea, a violent storm struck, scattering the boats and leaving many stranded far from home.
On Jindo, Baekgu sensed something was wrong. He paced the shore day and night, crying out toward the distant horizon. Hwari’s mother tried to calm him, but the dog refused to eat or rest.
Weeks passed with no word from the traders. Then, one misty morning, Baekgu heard a faint call—Hwari’s voice, carried by the wind. Without hesitation, he leapt into the water and began swimming across the roaring sea.
Hours later, exhausted but determined, Baekgu reached a rocky shore where Hwari sat, injured and hungry. She had survived the storm but could not make the long journey back alone.
Baekgu ran to her, whining with joy, and licked her tears away. That night, the dog kept watch as she slept, guarding her from the cold. At dawn, he guided her through forests, crossed streams, and chased away wild beasts that neared them.
For seven days, Baekgu led Hwari back toward Jindo, never slowing, never giving up. When they finally reached the island shore, villagers saw the pair approaching like spirits returning from another world.
Hwari collapsed in her mother’s arms, alive because of the dog who refused to forget her. But Baekgu, having spent all his strength, lay quietly at her feet. With his final breath, he looked at Hwari, his eyes full of love, and closed them gently.
The villagers built a small stone mound for him overlooking the sea. They said that on calm nights, a white dog-shaped mist wandered the shoreline, still watching over the people of Jindo.
And so, Baekgu’s loyalty became a legend—one that gave rise to the proud and faithful Jindo Dog, now cherished across Korea and beyond.
