“The Union of the Jangseung and the Sacred Tree”
(장승과 신목의 연합 · Jangseung-gwa Sinmok-ui Yeonhap)

🕰️ 1. The Story

Long ago, before tall buildings touched the clouds, villages in Korea were guarded by Jangseung—wooden totem poles carved with fierce faces and sacred inscriptions. They stood at the entrance of every settlement, protecting the people from evil spirits and misfortune.

In one such village, there was a pair of Jangseung: one male, carved from oak, and one female, carved from pine. They stood side by side for centuries, watching over the villagers who prayed and offered rice wine every new moon.

Behind them grew a great Sacred Tree (Sinmok) whose branches stretched like arms embracing the sky. The villagers believed that the spirit of the land lived within its roots, connecting heaven, earth, and all living things.

One year, a great drought struck the valley. Crops withered, rivers dried, and even the leaves of the sacred tree began to fall. The villagers despaired and pleaded to the Jangseung and the Sinmok for help.

That night, as the moonlight bathed the mountain, the spirit of the Sacred Tree whispered to the Jangseung:

“We have stood apart too long, you and I. Let us unite our strength and restore harmony to this land.”

The Jangseung bowed deeply and replied,

“Then let our roots intertwine, wood and spirit as one.”

As dawn broke, thunder rolled across the valley. A warm rain began to fall, gentle at first and then steady and full. The cracked earth drank deeply, and the dry riverbeds began to flow again.

When the villagers awoke, they saw an astonishing sight—the roots of the Jangseung had grown into the earth and joined with those of the Sacred Tree. The two had become one living being, standing tall and radiant beneath the sun.

From that day forward, no drought or illness touched the village again. People said that when the wind blew through the valley, they could hear two voices mingling softly—one deep and strong, the other tender and wise.

“Together, we guard the life that guards us.”
