“The Deer and the Hunter”
(사슴과 사냥꾼 이야기 · Saseumgwa Sanyangkkun Iyagi)
🕰️ 1. The Story
Long ago, deep in the misty forests of Korea, there lived a kind-hearted hunter. Though skilled with a bow, he never hunted more than he needed and always offered prayers of gratitude to the mountain spirit before taking an animal’s life.
One winter morning, the hunter set out to find food for his starving village. After hours of searching through the snow, he spotted a beautiful white deer standing silently near a frozen stream. Its eyes shone with sadness rather than fear. As he aimed his bow, the deer bowed its head—as if accepting its fate—and tears began to fall from its eyes.
The hunter’s hands trembled. He lowered his bow, moved by the animal’s sorrow. Suddenly, the deer spoke in a soft, human voice:
“Kind hunter, I am the guardian of this forest. Long have I protected those who respect life. Spare me, and I will guide you to what your village truly needs.”
Stunned but trusting, the hunter followed the deer through the woods. They arrived at a hidden spring where warm water flowed even in the coldest winter. The hunter realized it was a natural hot spring—a source of warmth and healing for his people.
When he turned to thank the deer, it had vanished into the mist, leaving only hoofprints that glowed faintly in the snow. The hunter returned to his village and led the people to the spring, saving them from the deadly cold.
From that day on, the villagers honored the White Deer Spirit, believing that compassion toward life brings unseen blessings.
