“The Brother and Sister Who Became the Sun and the Moon”
(해와 달이 된 오누이 · Haewa Dal-i Doen Onui)
🕰️ 1. The Story
Long ago, in a small mountain village, there lived a kind sister and her young brother. They were poor but happy, living with their mother who sold rice cakes in the nearby towns to make a living.
One evening, their mother did not return from the market. The children waited through the night, but there was only silence. When dawn came, a voice called from outside, soft yet strange:
“Children, it’s your mother. Open the door.”
The sister hesitated—something felt wrong. Peeking through a crack, she saw not her mother but a tiger, wearing her mother’s clothes, its eyes gleaming with hunger. Terrified, the siblings fled into the forest, with the tiger chasing close behind.
They ran until they reached a tall tree and climbed to safety. The tiger roared, circling below. Desperate, the sister prayed to heaven:
“Please, heavenly gods, save us from this beast!”
At that moment, a strong rope descended from the sky. The siblings held on tightly, and as they rose higher and higher, the tiger leapt to grab them—but another rope appeared for the beast, made of straw. It snapped, and the tiger fell to the earth, roaring in defeat.
The gods then spoke gently:
“Your courage and love for each other shall shine upon the world forever.”
The sister became the Sun, bright and warm, watching over the world with her gentle heart. The brother became the Moon, cool and calm, guiding travelers through the night.
And so, the sun and the moon have shared the sky ever since—siblings forever watching over humankind from above.
