“The Tears of the Mirror Goddess”
(거울 여신의 눈물 · Geoul Yeosin-ui Nunmul)
🕰️ 1. The Story
Long ago, in a land where mountains touched the clouds, there stood a secluded shrine known as the Hall of Mirrors. At its heart rested a sacred mirror said to hold the truth of all who gazed into it. The villagers believed the mirror was guarded by the Mirror Goddess, a quiet deity who watched over human hearts.
The Mirror Goddess did not judge beauty or status. Instead, her mirror reflected truth—the kindness hidden beneath scars, the envy buried behind smiles, and the sorrow masked by pride. For this reason, people approached the shrine with both hope and fear.
One year, a prolonged drought struck the land. Crops failed, wells dried, and tempers grew short. Blame spread faster than compassion.
A proud noblewoman named Lady Hwa came to the shrine, certain that the mirror would confirm her purity.
“Show me the reason for this suffering,” she demanded.
When she gazed into the mirror, it did not show her face. Instead, it revealed moments she had ignored: servants turned away hungry, neighbors shamed, apologies never spoken. Lady Hwa recoiled in anger.
“This mirror lies!” she cried, hurling a stone at the glass.
The mirror cracked—not shattering, but wounding the sacred reflection.
That night, rain began to fall—but it was warm and salty. The villagers realized it was not rain at all. It was the tears of the Mirror Goddess, falling from the heavens in sorrow.
Moved by fear and remorse, the villagers gathered at the shrine. Among them stood a young potter named Ara, known for her quiet generosity. She knelt before the cracked mirror and whispered,
“If the truth hurts, it is because we have strayed. Let us mend what we broke.”
Ara offered water to the thirsty, shared food without praise, and listened to grievances without defense. Others followed her example. Apologies were spoken. Old debts forgiven. Hands reached out instead of pointing fingers.
As kindness returned to the village, the crack in the mirror slowly faded. The salty rain turned fresh. The drought ended.
At dawn, the villagers found the mirror restored, its surface clear and calm. In it, they did not see perfection—only honest faces softened by humility.
They say that from that day on, the Mirror Goddess no longer wept. And when people look into mirrors with sincere hearts, they sometimes feel a warmth on their cheeks—as if a tear once shed has become a blessing.
