“The Tale of Yeon O-rang and Se O-nyeo”
(연오랑과 세오녀 이야기 · Yeon O-rang gwa Se O-nyeo Iyagi)
🕰️ 1. The Story
Long ago, in the ancient kingdom of Silla, a devoted couple named Yeon O-rang and Se O-nyeo lived by the sea. They sustained a humble life through fishing and weaving, their love simple yet profound — existing in harmony with the waves and the wind.
One fateful day, while Yeon O-rang was walking along the shore, a mysterious force suddenly swept him across the sea to Japan. Astonished by his radiant and dignified presence, the people of Japan believed him to be a divine being and immediately made him their king.
Meanwhile, back in Silla, Se O-nyeo waited anxiously. Her heart was consumed by longing, and soon, the sunlight over the kingdom began to fade, plunging the land into darkness. Desperate to restore the light, the people of Silla discovered that the fading sun was directly tied to the separation of the two lovers.
Determined to find her husband, Se O-nyeo crossed the ocean. Upon her arrival in Japan, the sun instantly shone brightly once more, and the heavens seemed to rejoice at their reunion. Together again, Yeon O-rang and Se O-nyeo prayed for peace and prosperity between the two lands. To honor them, the people of Silla built the Sun Shrine (Yeongildae) in Yeongil, where the rising sun was worshipped each morning.
