“The Tale of the Filial Son, Ondal”
(효자 온달 이야기 · Hyoja Ondal Iyagi)
🕰️ 1. The Story
Long ago, during the Goguryeo Kingdom, there lived a poor but kind-hearted young man named Ondal. Because of his humble background and awkward manners, people mockingly called him “Ondal the Fool.” Yet beneath his worn clothes and simple demeanor was a heart filled with unwavering loyalty, compassion, and deep devotion to his elderly mother.
Ondal devoted his entire life to caring for her. He often went hungry so that she might eat, and though he possessed nothing, his love and respect for her knew no bounds. Seeing her son’s hardship, his mother would often weep and say, “My dear son, I only wish you could live a life free from hunger.”
One day, Princess Pyeonggang, daughter of King Pyeongwon, overheard her father joke, “If you keep crying, I’ll marry you off to Ondal the Fool!” Taking those words to heart, the princess eventually left the palace in search of the poor young man. When she found him, she saw not a fool, but a pure and gentle soul who honored his mother above all else.
Moved by her sincerity, Ondal accepted her as his wife. With her guidance, he began to study, learning literature, manners, and swordsmanship. Through relentless effort and courage, Ondal transformed himself into one of Goguryeo’s greatest generals. Yet even after achieving fame and honor, he remained the same humble son—bowing before his mother’s grave and giving thanks for every blessing.
Tragically, Ondal fell in battle while defending his homeland. The people mourned not only a hero, but a man whose life embodied true devotion—to his mother, his wife, and his country. His story endures as a timeless symbol of humility, loyalty, and love that transcends social class.
