🕰️ 1. The Story

In a peaceful village surrounded by green paddies, there lived a farmer named Do-hyun, his wife Sook-ja, and their clever young daughter So-mi. Though poor, the family lived happily, working together and sharing simple meals under their thatched roof.

One summer, a severe drought struck the land. Wells dried up, crops withered, and even the village elders could not remember a year so harsh. The villagers began to quarrel over water, and fear hung over every home like a heavy cloud.

One evening, Do-hyun returned late from the fields, his face pale.

“The landlord is coming tomorrow,” he said. “He demands three sacks of barley as rent… but we have barely one.”

Sook-ja covered her mouth in worry. Their harvest had nearly failed; they had no way to meet the demand. If they failed, they would lose their home.

Little So-mi listened quietly, her eyes thoughtful.

“Father,” she said softly, “what if we let the landlord see what he fears most instead of what we lack?”

Do-hyun frowned. “What do you mean, child?”

So-mi smiled faintly.

“Sometimes fear hides the truth. And sometimes the truth hides in fear.”

That night, she gathered a few simple items:

▪️ a handful of dried leaves
▪️ a broken lantern
▪️ and her mother’s old mirror

The next day, the landlord arrived, towering and stern.

“Where is my rent?” he demanded.

So-mi stepped forward, bowing respectfully.

“Honorable sir, we will show you—but first, please follow me to the storehouse.”

Inside the dim room, she placed the dried leaves inside the empty sack and lit the lantern, letting it flicker weakly. The light cast strange shadows on the walls. When the landlord peeked inside the sack, So-mi secretly tilted the mirror, making the weak lantern light shimmer like grains of gold.

The landlord gasped.

“Is… is it filled to the top?”

So-mi replied gently,

“Not yet, sir. The drought has taken much. But open the storehouse windows, and the crops will surely finish drying soon.”

The landlord, sweating and uncertain, nodded quickly.

“Very well! Take your time. I will return next month.”

He hurried out, still shaken by what he thought he had seen.

Once he left, Do-hyun stared at his daughter in amazement.
“So-mi… how did you think of this?”

She shrugged, smiling.

“Father, I did not lie. I simply helped him look with his eyes, not his anger.”

By the next month, a small rain returned to the land. Their fields revived just enough to harvest exactly three sacks of barley. When the landlord returned, the family paid him honestly, and he left satisfied.

From that day on, the villagers often said that the drought ended because of a child’s bright heart—and her small wisdom that saved her home.
