(옥황상제와 딸의 지상 모험 · Okhwang Sangje-wa Ttal-ui Jisang Moheom)

🕰️ 1. The Story

High above the clouds, in the majestic Heavenly Palace, lived the Jade Emperor—Okhwang Sangje—who ruled over the heavens, stars, winds, and all living things below. Among his many children, his youngest daughter Harin was the most curious.

Harin loved watching the world beneath the clouds. She gazed at flowing rivers, blooming flowers, and lantern-lit villages scattered across the night.

“Father,” she often asked, “what is it like to walk among humans?”

But the Jade Emperor always answered,

“The world below is beautiful, but also full of hardship. Your heart is too gentle for suffering.”

Still, Harin’s longing grew.

One spring morning, as golden sunlight washed over heaven, she could no longer resist. She wrapped herself in a shimmering robe and followed a passing cloud down to earth.

She landed softly in a quiet valley, where wildflowers swayed like colorful waves. Harin gasped at the scent of pine and earth—so different from the sweet winds of heaven.

As she wandered, she heard crying near a broken bridge. A young boy was kneeling beside his mother, who lay pale and weak.

“Please… someone help us,” the boy sobbed.

Harin stepped forward.

“What has happened?”

The boy explained that a storm had swept away their crops, and his mother had worked herself sick trying to rebuild their home. They had no food, no strength, and no one left to rely on.

Moved by their suffering, Harin touched the mother’s forehead. A warm glow spread from her hand, and the woman’s breathing steadied. She opened her eyes in amazement.

“Are you… an angel of the heavens?”

But before Harin could answer, thunder cracked above.
The Jade Emperor’s voice echoed through the sky:

“Harin! Return at once.”

With a heavy heart, she knew she must obey. But she would not leave without helping one last time.

She gathered wildflowers, dew drops, and a feather from her robe. Pressing them together, they transformed into a heavenly seed.

“Plant this by your home,” she said. “It will grow into a tree that protects you from storms and brings food in times of need.”

The boy hugged her tightly.

“Thank you… I will never forget you.”

Harin rose through the sky, tears glimmering like stars.
Back in the Heavenly Palace, the Jade Emperor frowned.

“You disobeyed me, child. Why?”

Harin bowed.

“Father… if heaven exists to guide the world, then we must understand its suffering too.”

The Jade Emperor looked into his daughter’s eyes and, after a long silence, nodded.

“Your compassion has taught even me.
When the world below calls for help, heaven must listen.”

And so, he allowed Harin to visit earth once each year—on the first day of spring, when life begins anew.

Down in the valley, a magnificent tree grew where Harin’s seed was planted. Its fruit never spoiled, and its leaves glowed softly at night. The villagers called it “The Daughter’s Tree,” believing it was a gift from a heavenly maiden who once walked among them.
