“General Yi Sun-sin and the Legend of Yongjangsan”
(이순신 장군과 용장산 전설 · Yi Sun-sin Janggun-gwa Yongjangsan Jeonseol)
🕰️ 1. The Story
During the late 16th century, when the Korean Peninsula faced the fierce invasion of foreign fleets, there arose a hero whose name still echoes through the ages—Admiral Yi Sun-sin.
In those desperate days, Yi commanded the Korean navy with wisdom and courage, defending the seas with his legendary turtle ships (Geobukseon). Yet even the bravest hearts grow weary in the face of endless war. One stormy night, as the admiral’s fleet took refuge near Yongjangsan Mountain, he stood on the shore, gazing into the dark waves, silently praying for strength to protect his country.
Suddenly, lightning flashed across the sky, and the sea roared as if alive. From the depths rose a golden-scaled dragon, its eyes shining like stars. The admiral fell to his knees as the dragon spoke in a voice that shook the mountains:
“Yi Sun-sin, warrior of righteousness, your courage has reached the heavens. This mountain shall be called Yongjangsan (龍將山, Dragon General Mountain)—for it shall guard you as you guard your land.”
When the storm cleared, the admiral saw a faint dragon-shaped ridge stretching across the mountain behind him. Taking it as a divine sign, he rallied his men with renewed spirit. The next day, his fleet triumphed in a battle against overwhelming odds.
Years later, after the war had ended, villagers near Tongyeong claimed that on misty mornings, the outline of a great dragon could still be seen rising from Yongjangsan’s slopes. They believed it was the spirit of Admiral Yi and the sea dragon united—protecting the waters of Korea forever.
Even today, sailors and travelers bow toward the mountain before setting sail, whispering,
“May the Dragon General guard our way.”
