“The Woodcutter and the Heavenly Maiden”
(선녀와 나무꾼 · Seonnyeo wa Namukkun)
🕰️ 1. The Story
Long ago, a poor woodcutter lived a humble life in the mountains. One day, he came across a group of heavenly maidens bathing in a hidden pond. With the help of a magical deer, he learned that if he hid one maiden’s feathered robe, she would not be able to return to the heavens.
The woodcutter did so and married the heavenly maiden. They lived happily for a time and had children. Crucially, he never returned her robe. One day, she discovered it hidden away, and with sorrow and longing for her celestial home, she put it on and ascended back to heaven, leaving her family behind.
This tale ends with deep sadness, as the woodcutter tries to follow her with a magical gourd or rope but ultimately fails, falling back to earth. The story reflects both love and loss between a mortal and the divine.
🪄 2. Meaning & Lesson
The tale of the Woodcutter and the Heavenly Maiden reflects:
- The fragile bond between love and trust.
- The human desire to cling onto happiness, even through deceit.
- The sorrow of parting, teaching that love cannot thrive without honesty.
👀 3. Example from Life
- A relationship built on hidden truths will eventually collapse.
- When one person’s freedom is taken away, the bond becomes fragile.
- It serves as a strong lesson that genuine love must be built on honesty and respect.
