“The Sotdae and the Village Spirit”
(솟대와 마을 신 · Sotdae-wa Maeul Sin)
🕰️ 1. The Story
Long ago, before tall buildings or roads existed, Korean villages stood close to mountains and rivers. Each had its own guardian spirit—an unseen protector watching over crops, animals, and people.
One spring, after a harsh winter, a village suffered from illness and poor harvests. The villagers gathered at the edge of the fields to pray for help. That night, the village elder dreamed of a large wooden pole standing tall near the entrance of the village, topped with a carved bird that faced the sky. A divine voice whispered,
“Raise this pole toward the heavens, and your village shall be protected.”
The next morning, the elder shared his dream. The villagers carved a tall sotdae, placing it at the village gate. The bird atop the pole symbolized a messenger between heaven and earth, carrying the prayers of the people to the gods above.
From that day, the wind blew gently through the fields, and the sickness faded away. The harvest returned plentiful, and the villagers gave thanks to the Village Spirit (Dongshin, 동신) who had heard their prayers.
Since then, every village built its own sotdae—some with one bird, others with two, symbolizing peace and prosperity. During festivals, people would dance and offer rice wine beneath the pole, believing that as long as the bird stood watching the sky, their home would remain safe.
Even now, when you travel through the Korean countryside, you can see sotdae standing proudly by rice paddies and village gates, silently reminding all who pass that blessings come when people live in harmony with nature and each other.
