“The Legend of Banyabong in Jirisan”

(지리산 반야봉 전설 · Jirisan Banyabong Jeonseol)

🕰️ 1. The Story

Long ago, when the mountains of Korea still echoed with the voices of spirits, Jirisan (Mt. Jiri) stood as the highest and holiest of all. It was said that gods, tigers, and monks once shared its slopes, each seeking wisdom in their own way.

At the heart of Jirisan rose a gentle peak called Banyabong (Peak of Wisdom). The name “Banya” comes from the Sanskrit word Prajna, meaning enlightenment—the light of understanding that sees beyond illusion.

One spring morning, a wandering monk named Hyeon-seung climbed the mountain, searching for truth. For many years, he had traveled from temple to temple, yet peace eluded him. Near the summit, he found a small spring and a wild deer drinking from it. When the deer looked into his eyes, he felt something awaken in his heart—a stillness deeper than thought.

He sat beneath a pine tree and meditated for days without food or sleep. On the seventh night, a blinding storm swept over the mountain. The monk closed his eyes and whispered,

“Truth is not in the wind or the thunder—it is in compassion that does not move.”

As dawn broke, the storm cleared, and a radiant light spread across the peak. The monk smiled faintly and vanished, leaving only his robe and a lotus flower glowing in the sun.

From that day, villagers at the mountain’s base said that Banyabong shone with a soft golden light at sunrise. Pilgrims who climbed the mountain felt their hearts grow calm, as if touched by the monk’s spirit.

Even now, when mist drifts through Jirisan’s valleys, locals say it carries the monk’s whisper:

“True wisdom is not found in temples, but in hearts that choose kindness.”

And so, the mountain became known as Banyabong—The Peak of Enlightened Compassion.
